Scholarships available for Canadians and international students:Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship’s 2022-2023 competition is open to both Canadian and international students. This scholarship is awarded to highly motivated and competitive students who are pursuing a doctoral degree at a Canadian institution.

The Vanier CGS program is being administered by Canadian Governments agencies, the Canadian Institute of Health Research, the National Science and Engineering Council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. The Vanier Scholars receive a 50,000$ grant each year for three years. The program accommodates and supports up to 166 Scholars annually. In return, these scholars and world-class bright minds help in creating an effective and innovative environment in Canadian universities, especially in Canada as a whole.

This Canadian post-graduate scholarship program picks up doctoral students on three criteria having equal weightage. The selection criteria are academic excellence, research potential, and leadership qualities. As there is no interview for the nominated scholars for Vanier CGS 2022, all three selection criteria are assessed through the documents provided by the applicants.

·         must not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHRNSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral program.

Please note that only the PhD portion of a joint program is eligible for funding.

·         An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as requirement for a completion of the program.

·         Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) as well as clinically-oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are also eligible programs if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.

Number of months of doctoral studies

Regardless of disciplines, all prior doctoral-level studies that started in Canada or abroad, are considered in the evaluation of eligibility, and are considered to be continuous, full-time, and uninterrupted unless otherwise confirmed by the institution (including the summer months, unless on official leave). The Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) will count two months of part-time study as one month of full-time study.

Canadian federal government employees

Canadian federal government employees are eligible to hold a scholarship only if an unpaid leave of absence is taken (no salary or special allowances permitted).

Multiple applications

Eligible candidates may apply to both the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship program and other agency-specific doctoral-level scholarship/fellowships programs (whether to the same or a different federal granting agency) in the same academic year, provided that the research proposed in each application falls within the mandate of the federal granting agency to which the application is submitted. For more information, please refer to Identify area of research.
