The Queen’s
Commonwealth Essay Competition 2023 is now open for entries until 30 June 2023.
To mark the 50th
Anniversary of the Commonwealth Youth Programme, Commonwealth Heads of
Government declared 2023 a year dedicated to youth-led action for sustainable
and inclusive development and called on a renewal and strengthening of our
commitment to youth engagement and empowerment.
The Queen’s
Commonwealth Essay Competition 2023 asks entrants to explore the power young
people hold within the global community and consider how this power can be
harnessed to make a meaningful impact in the world.
The Queen’s
Commonwealth Essay Competition is the world’s oldest international writing
competition. 2023 marks 140 years since it was established in 1883. With
thousands of young people taking part every year, it is an important way to
recognise achievement, elevate youth voices and develop key skills through
creative writing.

Commonwealth Essay Competition Awards:
Top Prize for the winner:
Ø The top two winners
from each category will be awarded with a
trip to London for a week of educational and cultural events, culminating in a special Awards Ceremony at
a royal palace.
Awards:
Ø All successful
entries will receive a Certificate of
Participation and a number of entrants will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards for excellence in writing.
Eligibility
Criteria of the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competiton:
Ø In this essay
writing competition, entrants are divided into two categories.
o Senior Category:
Born between 1 July 2003 and 30 June 2008 (14-18 years)
o Junior Category:
Born on or after 1 July 2008 (Under 14 years of age)
Ø The residents or
nationals of all Commonwealth counties and territories can apply.
Ø Residents of
Ireland, Hong Kong, and Zimbabwe can apply.
Ø In the case of
participants from non-commonwealth countries, their entries must be submitted
through their Local Royal Commonwealth Society Branch
Requirements of the
Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2023:
Ø The entries must be
submitted in the English language. essays from any other language will not be
accepted
Ø The maximum word
count for Senior Category is 1500 words and for Junior Category the maximum
word limit is 750 words. Exceeding the words will result in disqualification.
Ø The word limit
applies to every format of writing e.g. essay, poem, letter, etc.
Ø Reference and
footnotes are excluded from the word count.
Ø The uploaded essay
of entrants should not include the personal details of the participants.
Personal details will be given exclusively during the application process.
Ø The topics must be
selected accordingly to the topics given in the Senior and Junior categories.
Ø No plagiarism will
be entertained and plagiarised entries will automatically be rejected

SENIOR
CATEGORY ((born
between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2009) 14-18 years of age)
v As Head of the
Commonwealth His Majesty The King is opening an international conference on the
importance of young people in decision making. Write his speech.
v Does age
matter?
v The 2023 Year of
Youth was a moment of significant social change - what was its impact on the
world?
v Script a dialogue
between two people, with contrasting viewpoints, on an issue that divides
generations.
JUNIOR
CATEGORY ((born
on or after 1 July 2009) under 14 years of age)
v In fiction and
throughout history, young people have performed numerous acts of heroism.
Choose your favourite young hero and write to them about why you admire them.
v What is your
youthful superpower, and how can it make a positive difference to the world?
v You have been
stranded on a planet where everyone is 18 or under. Journal your experience.
v Why does your voice
matter?
Submission Process:
Once the entry is
submitted, the entrants have to submit the following details
on competitions@royalsociety.org.
Ø Full name and
complete identification number
Ø School name.
Ø If the submission
is not a group submission, then give the details of submitting an adult.
Complete details of the curricular stage of the entrant.
Closing date of the
essay competition 2023:
Ø 30 June 2023
Good luck to all
the entrants as they have only one chance to submit their essay per entry. So,
before submitting their entries all the participants of this international
Commonwealth writing contest are advised to recheck their writing to avoid any
mistakes.
